What is Data Governance?

Data governance is the overall management of data availability, usability, integrity, and security within an organization, establishing policies, procedures, and accountability for data management.

Data governance is the set of processes, roles, policies, standards, and metrics that ensure the effective and efficient use of data in enabling an organization to achieve its objectives. In the context of privacy, data governance establishes the framework for how personal data is managed throughout its lifecycle, from collection through processing, storage, sharing, and eventual deletion or anonymization.

Key components of data governance include data ownership and stewardship (defining who is responsible for data quality and compliance), data classification (categorizing data by sensitivity and regulatory requirements), data quality management (ensuring accuracy, completeness, and timeliness), metadata management (maintaining information about data assets), and policy management (defining and enforcing rules for data handling). Effective data governance is essential for compliance with data protection regulations.

IQWorks supports comprehensive data governance through DiscoverIQ for automated data inventory and classification, ClassifyIQ for consistent data categorization, RetainIQ for lifecycle management, and ComplyIQ for policy management and compliance tracking. Together, these tools provide the technical infrastructure for a robust data governance program.
