What is Data Tokenization?

Tokenization replaces sensitive data with non-sensitive tokens that can be mapped back to the original data through a secure token vault, protecting data while preserving processability.

Tokenization substitutes sensitive data elements with non-sensitive equivalents called tokens that retain format and length but have no exploitable meaning. Unlike encryption, tokens cannot be mathematically reversed—the mapping between tokens and original values is stored in a secure token vault.

Tokenization is particularly valuable for payment card data (PCI DSS compliance) and personal identifiers where maintaining data format is essential for business processes. ProtectIQ provides tokenization services with format-preserving tokens that work seamlessly with existing applications and databases.
